Frank, L.Frank, Lucien Frank, born 1857-1920

Lucien Frank (1857 - 1920). Lucien Frank was born in Brussels on the 10th of November 1857, the third child of Joseph Frank and Serette Levy. There are indications that he received his artistic schooling in France. Being an adept of the \'pleinairisme\', he quickly discovered the charming village of Ohain, where he worked quite intensively in the period 1887-1890 and developed his own style. From 1890 onwards he worked a lot in the area of Tervuren where he settled for a short period. But also the Belgian coast and Holland appealed to him. In the course of time his interest shifted towards the animation of the streets and markets in the larger cities, which he rendered in a very personal style. At short intervals he travelled abroad. At the outbreak of the first World War, he left Belgium. During this exile which brought him to France and Spain, his wife died. Back in Belgium in 1919 he found, together with his son Paul, a new home in Ohain. Only a few months after he installed himself in his house he died of a sudden stroke on January 19th 1920.
